Greetings Everyone!
Today’s post is written in the new modern memoir style. Read it slowly, and immerse yourself in the experience.
Notice that the new modern memoir style doesn’t minimize or gloss over feelings but uses our senses to bring us fully present in the experience. The overall emphasis is on the outcome - what wisdom came as a result of the experience…
DNA, Apples and Eyes
Holding a photograph in my pale hand I discover a memory of an early spring visit to an apple orchard in New Zealand. Row after row of long tree-lined paths bursting with flowering branches soon to bare fruit.
Gazing at the picture between my fingers I see a reflection of my lineage, in my ten-year old granddaughter’s eyes, that she didn’t ask for yet was born into, just like me. Crisp red apples being carefully picked and placed in wooden baskets. Are we like that in our family tree? Season after season after season, another round of apples. A lineage.
Sienna is a lineage-holder for my next iteration. Those who have gone before me live through her, as I see my grandmother in her face. That realization frightens me. It also frees me with hope for my future, as humanity evolves. Grandchildren are like fine wine still on the vine: grapes, soaking up sunshine on their way to lips that will sip from a fine crystal glass.
In the hazel eyes of my grandson I see my own. Can all that I have seen, be seen from his eyes that look like mine? I wonder if his life is a memoir that I have written in his DNA, which he will unconsciously live out, thinking it is him. On reflection I realize with new appreciation the never-ending life-cycle of DNA, apples, and eyes.
